Banished during the low fat era, bacon is making a comeback in style. Amazing culinary creations like bacon jam, bacon-topped maple bars, and bacon ice cream have become commonplace.
The bacon fad isn’t entirely healthy (umm, fat-laden donuts plus more fat? yeah, no), but there’s definitely some healthy bacon recipes that allow you to enjoy the salty, savory strips without the guilt.
Would it surprise you if I admitted that I was once afraid of bacon? I’m pretty sure I went about 10 years without eating it because I thought it would make me fat. This was before I learned that eating too much of anything will make you gain weight. Not just carbs, fat, dessert, ice cream, chocolate, or broccoli. Science proves that the dominant factor to weight gain or loss lies in calories.
The thing is, bacon packs a ton of flavor. Adding a slice of bacon to your salad or pasta has a huge impact on flavor for only about 45 calories. And it’s so worth it.
Yes, bacon has more fat than it does protein, but fat is good for you in limited quanities. Your body needs it to absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Fat is satiating and has a “stick to your ribs” sorta property that enables you to stay full for longer.
And because it was hard for me in the past to find healthy bacon recipes, I’ve compiled a few for you. Each recipe is something I would make for myself. It’s healthy in that it has protein or vegetables and incorporates bacon without adding unnecessary fat or carbohydrates.
